DOPS! CEXs! CBDs! MSFs!

No these aren't the latest swear words invented by the thoroughly unpleasant alcoholic with a nasty pneumonia on the ward.
Worse than that.
These are the abbreviations of the various assessments I and all other lucky trainee doctors have to do throughout the years (until we become consultants).
DOPS = direct observation of procedural skills: ie SHO hovering over while you take blood for the zillionth time;
CEX = clinical evaluation exercise: ie SHO hovering over while you examine a patient's respiratory system (also for the zillionth time);
CBD = case-based discussion: ie sit down time with consultant and discuss a patient's admission focusing on any aspect that you found interesting/disturbing/scary/to be a talking point at the last minute!
MSF = multi-source feedback: ie sitting at the nurses station prevailing upon all those passing (from the ward clerk to other nurses, physios, OTs and fellow doctors) by to give you their email addresses so they can fill in a questionnaire about you (NB: most are happy to oblige, but fail to tell you that they only check their email accounts once in a blue moon).
One has to do 6 DOPS, 6 CEX, 4 CbDs and 1 MSF.
What have I done so far? 6 DOPS, 0 CEX, 1 CbD and 1MSF.
Need to get my act together. Its all too easy to put to a side and conveniently forget about.
I understand the need for constant evaluation. It makes doctors keep on their toes and has the best interests of patient safety at heart.
But its such a faff!
Gonna have to get used to it tho: its a faff that can really hamper my career if not enough attention is paid to it.
