There was an old lady
Who lived on my ward
Day in and day out
No one knew what was wrong.
She passed the day sleeping
And said nothing bothered her.
We wondered was she bothered at all?
Or were some nasty bugs at play?
But we found no infection.
And gave her antidepressants.
And waited for a change
But none came.
Then while we were sat scratching our heads,
She comes back from yet another test
Vomiting up coffee grounds.
Oh dear!
So in we went with fluid and oxgyen
And taking blood by the tubeful
To look at her CRP WCC and anything else
And while we were at it, a chest x-ray as well.
But everything came back
And we still had no clue
Was she bleeding? or septic?
What do we do?
So we're managing her for both
And we'll wait and see.
And that ladies and gentlemen,
Is medicine - at most times, a mystery.
